Curator (f/m/other), 30,0 - 38,5 hours/week
The Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession operates an independent and internationally recognized exhibition gallery. Its home is an icon of art nouveau architecture. In addition to the permanent presentation of Gustav Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze, its programming includes between ten and fifteen exhibitions of contemporary art per year, flanked by numerous publications, lectures, and discursive events.
The Secession is looking for a curator for 30 hours per week as of June 1, 2025, the position is limited until July 1, 2028.
For the period June 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026, the position is calculated as full-time (38.5 working hours), from July 1, 2026 to July 1, 2028 the position is calculated as part-time (30 working hours), but with the option to return to full-time.
Your responsibilities:
•
You lead the development of exhibitions, publications, and events with accompanying scholarly contributions in close consultation with the Association’s board and the artists invited by the board
•
You manage projects and organize and implement the production of exhibitions, including by supporting artists during the production phase, processing loans, handling transportation issues, and researching materials and expenses
•
You edit publications
•
You produce and edit writings and other educational formats
•
You organize and realize podcasts
•
You conceive and realize exhibition-related programs of events
•
You present and communicate the programming to the public
•
You manage budgets
•
You acquire third-party funds together with the co-managing directors
Your profile:
•
You hold an academic degree in curatorial studies, cultural studies, art history, or another field in the humanities or have equivalent practical experience
•
You possess deep knowledge of current discourses in contemporary art and extensive familiarity with the Austrian as well as international arts scene
•
You have several years of professional experience in curating and cultural education
•
You have outstanding communication skills, confidence, and poise and are able to think and work in a team
•
You are sensitive to diversity, inclusion, and anti-discrimination concerns
•
You are highly flexible and take a proactive and structured approach to your work
•
You speak and write German and English at or above Level C1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; knowledge of additional languages is a plus
•
You are proficient in the use of MS Office
