/Mission

As an artist-run international institution exhibiting contemporary art, the Secession is an open venue for presentations of new creative ideas and engagements with the urgent concerns of our time. Confronting the complex realities of life and global challenges, we believe it is a core part of our mission to grapple with questions of cultural and social policy and showcase ambitious visions that spark public debate.
The Secession provides artists with an arena for a wide range of forms of creative expression and a platform that imposes no restrictions on the kind of experimentation that is often fundamental to the production of new works. The exhibition program is drawn up by the Secession’s board in a democratic and collective decision-making process.
In keeping with the motto emblazoned on its façade—To each era its art. To art its freedom—the Secession under its current board lives up to its stature as a leader in the international discourse by standing against discrimination based on gender and sexuality in patriarchal systems, racism, anti-Semitism and social injustice with its exhibition and event program under the current board of directors.
