Verena Dengler’s installations, objects, pictures, drawings, texts, videos (and much more) are laced with allusions, pointed, sometimes riotously funny, and now and then deliberately strident. Trenchant observations of the art world, its mechanisms and historically contingent conditions, as well as the artist’s own entanglements in it are often the point of departure for works that offer reflections in which astute critique is leavened by humor.
The gamut of her interests is reflected by the numerous fields in which she has exercised her creative imagination. “Jackie of all Trades” was the nickname with which she introduced herself in an eponymous exhibition at Kunsthalle Bern (2017) as a multifaceted artist, artist-curator, and writer. She also produces a steady stream of highly readable art and cultural criticism for various media and, most recently, she has branched out into the theater, contributing stage and costume designs to productions in the 2018–2019 season at the Berliner Ensemble and elsewhere.

Verena Dengler lives and works in Vienna.
