Peter Doig im Gespräch mit Matthew Higgs

Peter Doig (b. 1959) is a contemporary Scottish artist, celebrated as one of the most important representational painters working today. He will be presenting a new body of work at his first solo exhibition in Austria in the main room of the Secession.
Peter Doig draws inspiration for his figurative work from photographs, newspaper clippings, pop culture and music, movie scenes, and the work of late 19th century artists. His compositions combine planar forms in a palette that is as bold as it is nuanced with vivid painterly gestures. They often unfold complex narratives. With a keen eye for the faintly unsettling quality that looms just beneath the surface of his paintings, Doig insistently probes man’s encounters with nature and the loneliness of human existence. His most recent work shows a growing interest in the human figure.

Matthew Higgs (b. 1964) is an artist, writer and curator based in New York. He is currently the director and chief curator of White Columns, New York’s oldest alternative space. Over the past twenty-five years he has organized more than two-hundred exhibitions and projects with artists in Europe and North America, including a section of the 2009 edition of Vienna’s city-wide ‘Curated By’. A regular contributor to Artforum magazine, his writings have appeared in more than fifty books and exhibition catalogs. Higgs and Doig have been friends since the early 1990s and have collaborated on a number of projects since then, including a recent series of exhibitions they co-curated of the work of the British-Caribbean artist Denzil Forrester.
