Nairy Baghramian im Gespräch mit Florian Pumhösl

Solo exhibitions at prestigious institutions all over the world and acquisitions of her works by numerous public and private collections have established Nairy Baghramian as one of the foremost sculptors of her generation. In works that typically takes the (fragmented) human body as its point of departure, she grapples with the fundamental questions of art-making. Her creations for interior as well as exterior settings often consist of multiple elements and disparate materials such as aluminum, glass, pigmented wax, marble, porcelain, cork, polyurethane, and epoxy resin.

In her solo exhibition in the Secession’s main hall, the artist now presents an installation that responds to the specific qualities of the setting, combining sculptures from her series Dwindlers and Breath Holding Spells, from which the exhibition also takes its title.

Nairy Baghramian was born in Isfahan in 1971 and lives and works in Berlin.

Florian Pumhösl’s recent exhibitions include “I hear the ancient music of words and words, yes, that’s it.“ (with Vincent Fecteau), MAK Center for Art & Architecture, Schindler House, Los Angeles; “The Poet-Engineers“ (2021) and „Saltern“ (2019), Miguel Abreu Gallery, New York; “Paul Bonet – Drawings for Bookbindings“, Musée d’art contemporain Bordeaux and Galerie Buchholz, New York, 2018.

Rooms with work by Pumhösl and Baghramian were presented in the exhibition “Figures and Prefigurations” in 2013, at City Gallery, Prague, curated by Karel Cisar. Pumhösl teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.

Florian Pumhösl, born in 1971, lives and works in Vienna and Munich.
