Francis Alÿs is known for his understated interventions and performative actions as well as for initiating and coordinating large-scale collective events saturated with allegorical significance. In its subtlety and inscrutable quality, Le temps du sommeil (1996–), the centerpiece of this exhibition, is a paradigmatic example of his oeuvre at large. Alÿs is one of the most widely acclaimed artists working today; the exhibition at the Vienna Secession is his first solo show in Austria.

Catherine Lampert is an independent curator and art historian. She has curated numerous exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery, the Whitechapel Gallery, where she was director from 1988 to 2001, and the Royal Academy of the Arts. Her publications include Francis Alÿs: The Prophet and the Fly (2003); Euan Uglow: The Complete Paintings (2007), Peter Doig (2011) and Frank Auerbach: Speaking and Painting (2015) and recent essays on Georg Baselitz, Miquel Barceló and Rodin.
