Danh Vo’s installations present a plethora of artistic strategies and materials, including sculpture, photography, calligraphy as well as documents and found objects. In his spatial concepts, he acts as an artist, curator, historian and collector.
“When you examine the present you must understand your past: the past that has identified your own present. I also believe you must look into the future. That’s definitely a philosophy of life that I live with and hopefully that shows in the work that I do.” (Danh Vo)
Vo’s work has been featured in major solo exhibitions, including The National Museum of Art, Osaka, (2020); Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, Guggenheim Museum, New York (2018); and Reina Sofia, Madrid (2016). In 2015 he represented Denmark at the Venice Biennale.
Danh Vo was born in Bà Rịa, Vietnam, in 1975 and lives and works in Berlin and Mexico City.
Manuela Ammer is curator at the mumok – mumok – Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, where she presented exhibitions such as Steve Reinke: Butter (2020), Pattern and Decoration: Ornament as Promise (2019), Bruno Gironcoli: Shy at Work (2018), Painting 2.0: Expression in the Information Age (2016, together with Achim Hochdörfer, David Joselit and Tonio Kröner) and Ulrike Müller: The old expressions are with us always and there are always others (2015).
Ammer has published articles for magazines such as Frieze, Texte zur Kunst and Parkett, as well as monographic essays on the work of numerous artists. She is currently working with Ulrike Müller on a collection-based exhibition on the subject of “Das Tier in Dir”, which focuses on the processes of “taming and framing” in natural and art history.
