/Announcement: Gerhard and Birgit Gmoser Prize for Contemporary Art, Vienna Secession

ANNOUNCEMENT: ART PRIZE

June 21–August 22, 2023

 

GERHARD AND BIRGIT GMOSER PRIZE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART, VIENNA SECESSION

 

This year, the Association of Visual Artists Vienna awards the fifth triennial Gerhard and Birgit Gmoser Prize for Contemporary Art, Vienna Secession. Birgit Gmoser established the Gerhard und Birgit Gmoser-Stiftung in 1999 in memory of her late husband, the Austrian diplomat and painter Gerhard Gmoser; the charitable foundation’s purpose is to underwrite the award promoting the work of emerging artists.

 

The contest is open to all residents of Austria without restrictions as to genre and conferred in recognition of an artist’s entire oeuvre. It carries a cash award of EUR 5,000. All artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, or new media are encouraged to apply.

 

The prizewinning artist is selected by a panel of five experts. As part of the award ceremony, s*he is given the opportunity to present her*his work in a public conversation at the Secession in Vienna.

 

The Gmoser emerging artist prize is awarded by the Secession every three years. Previous winners: Heidrun Holzfeind and Barbara Eichhorn (2011); Ramesch Daha (2014); Claudia Märzendorfer (2017); Rosa Hausleitner (2020).

 

DATES

Contest opens: June 21, 2023

Final deadline for submissions: August 22, 2023

Notification of prizewinning artist: mid-September 2023

Award ceremony and public conversation with the artist: early October 2023

 

JURY

The prizewinning artist is selected by a panel of five experts in the fields of art and culture whose members were freely chosen by the board of the Secession. The heterogeneity of the panel, which is chaired by the president of the Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession, ensures a multifaceted discussion of the works.

CASH AWARD

The Gerhard and Birgit Gmoser Prize for Contemporary Art, Vienna Secession carries a cash award of EUR 5,000. As part of the award ceremony, the prizewinning artist is given the opportunity to present her*his work in a public conversation at the Secession in Vienna.

 

HOW TO APPLY

All applications must be submitted by email to gmoserpreis@secession.at between June 21 and August 22, 2023. Applications must be in full compliance with all of the following requirements and must be submitted in German or English.

 

Required application documents:

· one A4 page with contact information (first names, last name, email address, telephone number, year of birth) and biographical sketch

· information on works: no more than two A4 pages with recent and high-quality photographs of works and informative descriptions; links to further information (website, online films, etc.) optional.

Please note: only the first two pages of application materials in excess of two pages will be considered.

 

Please consolidate the documents in a single (!) pdf file and label the file as follows: Name_Firstname_Gmoserpreis.pdf.

Total size: one email including pdf document with a maximum size of 5 MB.

 

AWARD CEREMONY IN OCTOBER 2023

The award ceremony and the public conversation with the prizewinning artist are held at the Secession in early October 2023.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1. By submitting their applications, artists agree with all of the following terms and conditions. Applicants cannot modify or void any of the terms and conditions, in whole or in part.

 

1.1. Participation in the contest is free of charge. There is no participation fee.

 

1.2. All artists are eligible to participate who have maintained a residence in Austria for at least five years.

 

1.3. There is no age limit for participation in the contest.

 

1.4. All applications are submitted without the possibility of recourse to legal action. All applicants respect the decision of the jury.

 

1.5. Applicants are the authors in accordance with § 10 section 1 of the Austrian Federal Law on Copyright in Literary and Artistic Works and Related Rights of the works they submit. Submissions must not violate third-party copyrights, rights of use, or other intellectual property or personal rights. Applicants affirm that no such rights are violated and indemnify the Secession in the event of any infringement.

 

1.6. The works submitted remain the applicant’s property, including in the event that s*he is awarded the prize. However, the applicant grants the Secession the absolute right free of charge to present her*his works in connection with the Gerhard and Birgit Gmoser Prize for Contemporary Art, Vienna Secession, photograph them, and use such photographs for purposes of press relations and in its own publications and website.

 

1.7. Applications must be submitted by email (gmoserpreis@secession.at) before August 22, 2023, 11:59pm. No applications will be accepted after this deadline. Applicants must submit their documents and images by email and in strict compliance with the stated requirements.

 

2. The prizewinning artist is selected from among the anonymized applications by a jury whose members are freely chosen by the board of the Secession. The jury’s deliberations are closed to the public.

 

2.1. The prizewinning artist is notified after the jury meets (mid-September 2023). All other applicants will not be notified. They may learn of the decision by visiting the website at www.secession.at.

 

2.2. The form of the presentation of the prizewinner’s work and the public conversation with the artist as part of the award ceremony will be determined by the Secession in consultation with the prizewinner at an appropriate time before the ceremony.

 

3. By entering their submissions, applicants consent to the Secession’s storing their personal and work-related information and its public use of this information and the works submitted for purposes related to the contest.

 

3.1. Applicants grant the Secession as the contest’s organizer the nonexclusive global right to the use of the works and texts they submit in connection with the contest. They give the Secession permission free of charge to publish and reproduce the works and texts submitted for purposes related to the contest.

 

4. No legal claim may be made to the cash award and the public conversation with the artist. To the extent permitted by law, the Secession disclaims all warranties and liabilities.

 

5. Austrian law applies; Vienna is the sole place of jurisdiction.

 

6. These terms and conditions are binding.
