As part of the initiative 10 Vienna Museums x 17 SDGs by ICOM Austria and OekoBusiness Vienna, the Secession pursues new measures for sustainability. As one of 10 Vienna museums, we are working to implement the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Since 2016, the UN’s 17 SDGs have served as a global plan to promote sustainable peace and prosperity and protect our planet, and are intended to serve as a shared vision to fight poverty and reduce inequalities in national development plans.
Each of the participating Viennese museums has chosen two of the United Nations’ 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). The Secession has chosen the following goals:

Secession Honey
Several bee colonies have made their home on the roof of the Secession building since 2013. The parks, tree-lined streets, and meadows around the Secession provide the bees with a rich selection of blossoms to feed on throughout the season.
Honeybees are essential to the reproduction of around 80 percent of all crop and wild plants around the world. When the bees are critically endangered, the survival of these plants is threat- ened as well and with it the production of food for humans. By protecting bee colonies, beekeepers and their hives help sustain the diversity of plant life.
Since 2018, Hans Weinberger has harvested the Secession’s honey. A longtime member of the Secession’s technical team and leader of its exhibition installation crew, Hans is also a trained beekeeper. In his free time, he is devoted to bees, beehives, and honey-making.

We look forward to sharing more about the concepts we have developed soon. Beyond that, the other sustainability goals already are important as part of our work and will receive even more attention and integration in the future.
