A fascinating mixture of prose book and art book, Gizmo is the result of a collaboration between Danish writer Ida Marie Hede and German artist Christian Mayer. The thrilling dialogue of image and text captures the spirit of symbiotic movements between visibility and invisibility, materiality and dissolution, oblivion and recollection.

Images and text are deeply interwoven in this book and, still, both insist on their autonomy. A central theme that unfolds is the revolutionary potential and fragile life of things which have become marginal, overlooked, or obsolete – like the now-defunct medium of Polaroid that Christian Mayer uses in order to spin a complex web of formal and narrative cross references around the visualization and archiving of our reality. Ida Marie Hede weaves fragments of Mayer’s visual work into her narrative of the twin orphans Genesse and Caresse and their quest for affective and sensuous modes of being in a world filled with delusive stagings of identity and gender.

Bringing together literary text and visual art in this book doesn’t point to a shortcoming, to a compensation of one in the other. Instead, Gizmo is the expression of an extended potential, of something that runs into a parallelism without synchronizing and which creates breaks in time, space, thought and experience.
